Stronger Together for Students
I’m Brian Gaspar—a Mercer Island parent, education advocate, and former associate professor with deep experience in technology, finance, and public education. I’m running for school board to strengthen academics, restore financial stability, and ensure every student feels safe, supported, and prepared for the future. Here’s how we get there:
🔬 Curriculum That Prepares for the Future
Mercer Island once ranked #1 in Washington. Today, we’ve dropped to #5—with the lowest math scores, second-lowest graduation rate, and a 19.5% decline in Islander student enrollment. While the curriculum budget rose to $13.5M, inflation-adjusted spending has actually fallen 3.5%, and no major new STEM or literacy initiatives have been launched.
I’ll prioritize evidence-based learning, stronger math and science pathways, career training options, and expanded support for special education—so current students thrive and one that makes parents confident in choosing Mercer Island schools.
💰 Financial Integrity That Rebuilds Trust
The district’s credit rating has been downgraded twice in the past three years—while over $13M in capital reserves were drained to cover operations and families were asked to pay again for the same repairs through new bonds.
I’ve led billion-dollar budgets and turnarounds—I’ll stop the double-pay asks, rebuild reserves, and ensure every dollar is spent wisely, transparently, and with community approval so current families see their tax dollars directly benefit their children.
🛡️ Safe, Inclusive Schools for Every Child
Only 16% of parents believe the district supports student well-being. Schools face roof leaks, outdated systems, and rising behavioral challenges—yet staffing hasn’t kept pace.
As a parent, coach, and community trustee, I’ll champion stronger safety protocols, upgraded facilities, mental health staffing, and privacy protections—so every child feels safe, supported, and able to succeed right now.

Why I’m Running
As a Mercer Island parent, community volunteer, and education advocate, I’m running for school board to strengthen academics, expand STEM, and restore financial stability—while protecting the arts and programs that make our schools exceptional.
I’ve heard directly from families, educators, and students who are concerned about service cuts, financial instability, declining enrollment, and a curriculum falling behind in an AI-driven world. These are urgent issues that demand action.
With over 20 years of leadership in education, technology, and compliance—including teaching at San Francisco State, leading global teams, and building AI-powered learning tools—I bring the real-world experience needed to tackle these challenges. Locally, I coach youth lacrosse and serve as a Trustee for the Open Space Conservancy Trust, deepening my connection to Mercer Island families.
Our schools need leadership with both expertise and heart. I’m ready to listen, lead, and deliver results for every student—and I’d be honored to earn your vote.
